Calhoun Middle/High School to Host Financial Aid Workshop
CMHS will offer a free financial aid workshop to help students and parents learn more about aid to pay for college. The workshop will be held March 24th from 8:00 to 8:30 at CMHS in the College & Career Room.
Experts will be available to discuss state and federal financial aid options, including West Virginia’s PromiseScholarship Program, West Virginia Invests Grant, and the West Virginia Higher Education Grant Program.
Workshop presenters will also discuss the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and assist families in preparing to complete financial aid applications. Any student planning to earn a trade certificate, a two-year college degree, or a four-year college degree should attend the free workshop.
Students planning to attend college in the fall of 2026 should try to complete the FAFSA before April 15 to be considered for the West Virginia Higher Education Grant. To be considered for the Promise Scholarship.
Students and parents can learn more about financial aid by visiting the state’s free college and career-planning website at CFWV.com.
📢 Parent Update: CyberSWAT Online Safety Lessons
West Virginia now requires all public schools to provide annual online‑safety instruction for students in grades 3–12 under Senate Bill 466. Parents who would like to read the bill can find it here:
Senate Bill 466
To meet this requirement, our students will be completing CyberSWAT Skyll lessons—interactive, age‑appropriate sessions that teach safe and responsible technology use.
These lessons address several important topics, including:
Recognizing online predators
Understanding the risks of sexting or sharing explicit materials
Cyberbullying prevention
Human trafficking awareness
Safe use of online communication platforms
How to identify, avoid, and report dangerous or illegal online behavior
The parent letter has been sent home with 6-12th grade students and will be sent home with grades 3-5 next week. It explains that the SWAT program provides interactive lessons focused on digital literacy and online safety.
Parents can preview a sample lesson here:
CyberSWAT Sample Lesson
Thank you for partnering with us to help keep students safe as they navigate today’s digital world.

Bus 21 will be delayed due to a line down on Sassafras. This will require the bus to back track, creating a 30 min delay for students who live on Russett/Rt 7.

If you have questions, feel free to reach out to your school’s main office.

✍️🌟 Celebrating Our WV Young Writers!
Calhoun County is proud to recognize our outstanding WV Young Writers contestants whose creativity, imagination, and storytelling shined across every grade level. Our judges shared that they truly enjoyed every story submitted this year. These selected entries stood out based on a rubric that considered grammar, language usage, plot development, overall flow, and—most importantly—creativity.
- Grades 1–2: Abigail Hicks
- Grades 3–4: Gracelynn Baker
- Grades 5–6: Willis Gainer‑Pittman
- Grades 7–8: Harlow Sarratori
- Grades 9–10: Jasmyne Tingler
- Grades 11–12: Madison Cunningham
These young authors represent the heart and talent of our students. Their dedication to writing and their willingness to share their voices make us incredibly proud. We also want to recognize Mrs. Webb, Mrs. Hoskins, Mrs. Summers, Mrs. Stewart, and Dr. Gainer, whose encouragement and guidance helped these writers find the confidence to tell their stories
These students will have the opportunity to participate in Young Writers Day at the University of Charleston in May, where their creativity will be honored alongside students from across the state. ❤️
