Glenville State University will be hosting their annual college fair on September 13th. Calhoun juniors and seniors are invited to attend. There will be recruiters from various colleges and universities around West Virginia, as well as military recruiters. Interested students must sign up and have a signed parent permission form by the end of the day on the 12th. The sign up sheet and permission form can be found in Mrs. Winkler's room. We will depart CMHS @8:15 and return in the afternoon before the dismissal bell. Lunch will be provided by GSU. Greetings from Senator Capito’s office! Last year, approx. 19 students attending or who have attended schools in Berkeley, Brooke, Cabell, Hardy, Harrison, Jefferson, Kanawha, Lincoln, Marion, Mercer, Monongalia, Monroe, Ohio, and Putnam county received appointments to United States Service Academies and Preparatory Schools and began their journeys this summer. WV students graduated from U.S. Service Academies in 2023 and are moving forward to wonderful careers in various fields. Our WV students are more than capable of meeting the challenge of completing these prestigious institutions, but they must be aware of these opportunities in order to take advantage of them. The key to a student’s success (besides academic, physical, and extracurricular achievements) is being informed about potential opportunities at these educational institutions and starting the information gathering process as early as possible. An appointment to a U.S. Service Academy is a fully funded education opportunity valued from $240,000 to more than $400,000. We are writing to request that you spread the word to your students that Academy Day 2023 will be held for any and all students, parents and school officials interested in learning more about U.S. service academies (Air Force, Coast Guard, Merchant Marines, Military/West Point, Naval). We will also have representatives from local ROTC programs on hand to discuss ROTC scholarship opportunities. The dates and locations for the 2023 Fall Program are below: FBI Charleston, WV Teen Academy; October 18, 2023 FBI Huntington, WV Teen Academy; October 19, 2023 FBI Pittsburgh, PA Teen Academy; October 26, 2023 FBI Martinsburg, WV Teen Academy; November 2, 2023 Teen Academy is a one-day hands-on program for current High School Juniors and Seniors (2023-2024 school year) who live within the FBI Pittsburgh Division’s area of responsibility in Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Teen Academy is a chance for youth to learn about the FBI and what a variety of career paths in the FBI would entail. Selected students are offered insight into a number of topics and specialties, including the importance of making good choices when using online communication platforms, federal law violations the FBI investigates, requirements of all FBI applicants, and the FBI’s domestic and international roles. Students will also enjoy various hands-on experiences involving specialized areas of the FBI, such as our Evidence Response Team. After completing the class, students are more aware of challenges their communities face, better understand how the FBI serves their region, and are prepared to mentor their peers. Lifetouch will be here MONDAY, AUGUST 28, 2023 to take student portraits. Senior and underclassmen will be taken on this day. Senior portraits will be formal (drapes, shirt, tie, and jacket) for senior students and those items will be provided by Prestige Portraits that day. Please plan to get your picture taken that day even if you don't plan to purchase the pictures so that your picture will be in the yearbook.

Dear CMS 6th Graders, Mr. Cosgrove couldn't wait to see you and begin teaching you in two weeks. He's ready to get started NOW! Please see the following message from him: Sixth Grade Social Studies Students Your teacher can’t wait to get started Preamble Challenge! The first thing I want you to learn this year is, who’s the boss in this country. The Constitution tells you the roles and responsibilities of the three branches of government, and exactly how the government works. It is explained in the articles and amendments. However, who is in charge, and the goals of the Constitution, are given in the first paragraph, called the Preamble to the Constitution. In fact, the first three words will tell you who is in charge. Your job: memorize the Preamble, and recite it to me on the first day of class, August 18th. If you do recite it, you will get 3-raffle tickets. I have to give the kids a chance that didn’t get to see this, and will tell them on the 18th. They only have until the 21st for 2 tickets. At least three prizes will be given to each class. I’m a poor teacher so don’t expect too much (basketball, fishing pole type stuff). If you are shy that first day, you can work with a friend and recite it together (you don’t have to recite it in front of the whole class, but, I hope you do). Have fun with this, don’t panic, it is not mandatory. Enjoy the rest of your summer. On April 19th, Mason Siwicki competed in the Trig-Star math competition at Glenville State University. The event was supported by the WV Society of Professional Surveyors and the National Society of Professional Surveyors. After receiving 1st place at GSU, his score was compared with other winners across the state. He was notified this week that of all the participants in WV, he was ranked the top scorer. Later this month Mason will be taking the National Trig-Star exam representing WV.

The week of June 11th-16th Emily Anderson attended American Legion Auxiliary WV Rhododendron Girls State. Throughout the six days she listened to guest speakers including Senator Shelley Moore Capito and other WV state elected officials. She participated in learning about our state government and learned many leadership skills. Girls State has a mock election, where Emily ran for the House of Delegates. She was elected into the House among her peers. With this, she made history and was given the opportunity to take part in the very first joint Legislative session between Mountaineer Boys State and Rhododendron Girls State. The bill that she took part on passed through both the House and the Senate. It was titled Community Mental Health Initiative. This bill extended access to facilities and services for mental health in the state of WV. Emily said “It was one of the best things I have ever experienced, and Girls State will always hold a special place in my heart!” Emily is a senior at Calhoun Middle High School and is the daughter of Shannon and Trudi Anderson.
